Why is everything so black and white?

Blog by: Jessica Ford - Coordinator
In a world filled with so many decisions that are perpetually black and white, what is so wrong with grey?

Black has long been a staple palate for wedding, along with is typical pairing in red, white, and pink. So bold, so classic. But again, I beg the question, what happened to grey as the long lost pallet pairing? It's a much softer of a color, ranging from the deepest charcoal to the palest shade of spring fog; it also pairs very lovely with a vast range of hues. Grey has emerged as the urban chic color of weddings this year, and its versatility accommodates the exceedingly black tie event to the lightest of April flings.

Pairings:

Chic

Dust pink, storm cloud grey

Slate blue, newspaper grey, charcoal

Indigo, cement grey

Sage green, twilight grey

Plum, charcoal grey

Black, charcoal, cement & ivory

Classic

Red, charcoal grey & heather grey

Yellow, cement grey & white

Ocean Blue, twilight grey & ivory

Kelly green, river rock grey & pale grey

Lets talk about a classic pairings with black and then their grey counterparts.

Red, black and white. Very classic, quite common, and rather harsh. Typically evoking emotions of love, Valentines day, red roses, and Moulin Rouge. This color combo can also result in flat looking pictures, with very little depth in the color variations. Red is red and that's about it. Flowers don't come in true black.

Red, grey and white. Still very classic, not nearly as common and much softer to the eye. Everyone who looks good in black will still look good (and photograph beautifully) in a medium to dark grey. It adds an unexpected element for your guests as your printing can be in grey rather than black, and so can your flowers. Many "greens" come in wonderful shades of grey (like dusty miller) to add enormous amounts of depth and options for your bouquet and centerpieces. Grey also comes in a broad range of colors, giving you amazing selection for your favors, stationary, and attire.

Do something unexpected.

Hard Rock Hotel Visit

Blog entry by: Jessica Gillon (Owner/Partner)
I had the pleasure of touring the brand new Hard Rock Hotel with catering manager Staci Tiras-Jones. Simply walking into the lobby is an experience all in itself. You are greeted by young women in the coolest boots I have ever seen! Sounds bizarre, but when you see them, you'll understand! The check in desk has four kiosks with a wall that is actually a huge screen. It displays different images from rock videos, to pictures, to random patterns of color. One really cool thing, there is a VIP/Secret lobby that is used for celebrities and suite owners. Pretty cool!

Staci and I started off with lunch in the hotel diner, Mary Jane's. The décor is kind of a classic American Retro meets modern day technology! The menu is all American and delicious! I had an incredible Buffalo Chicken Salad and for dessert (yes, I took it to that level, dessert in the middle of the day!) I had, just like mom's home cookin, chocolate cake. It was fabulous!

After lunch, Staci walked me through as much of the property as possible. There are about 17 different spaces for events, an amazing spa, a couple of bars, a pool with velour covered mattress size cushions for lounging, cabanas, rooms that have a feel of the W with a rock and roll twist and last but not least, the nationally acclaimed Nobu. I toured the restaurant while it was closed so I wasn't able to experience the food for myself, but I will definitely be coming back!

I have to say, I am so excited about this property! With their "breaking all the rules" mentality, this venue is ideal for creative, exciting and unique events!

For the client that is looking for something untraditional modern, cutting edge, technical or down right rock n' roll, this is the place for you! The Hard Rock has Events by Design written all over it!

It was a warm August evening that we named "Hot Spanish Nights."

Kiosks of delectable food were situated throughout the Courtyard thanks to an amazing company, Events by Christopher. The menu consisted of an assortment of exotic fruits and gourmet cheeses a plethora of chevice (shrimp, halibut, mussels, even lobster), flat bread pizza featuring duck, filet of beef, calamari, and ahi tuna, skewers featuring lamb chorizo, scallops, beef and lobster. Let's just say, the attendee's were not disappointed!!! To see more from this amazing company visit their website at http://www.eventsbychristopher.com/

The bar was provided by Event Beverage Service (EBS). One thing this company has mastered, custom made bars for their clients. Association of Bridal Consultants Vendor Showcase

This April Jessica participated in ABC first ever, Coordinators Tabletop Competition.

It was a great experience. More than anything I was able to get to know two wonderful coordinators, Jenny from Bliss Events and Sharon Cole with A Bride's Dream. There is no doubt we all have different tastes, but in the end I think it worked to our advantage!

Navy blue is one of the new hot colors of the year. After much discussion… we finally decided to go with a clean lined, chic yacht kind of feel. It was crucial that the draping and lighting felt cooling, soothing, and refreshing. I think we accomplished that! The place setting had a very clean and modern line to it. By the way thank you Crate and Barrel! (www.crateandbarrel.com). Each bowl was filled with sand and a gorgeous leopard print shell that Jenny found. It really added that dark color that was much needed. The gorgeous florals were created by the insanely talented Linda Seegar of Floral Poetry (www.floralpoetry.com). Linda used beached wood, many varieties of orchids and some really interesting exotic greens.
We tied with another team for first place. And though it is nice to know that brides and fellow professionals enjoyed our design, getting to know Jenny and Sharon was the true reward. That may sound cheesy, but it's true!

DJ’s Provide Entertainment for 80’s Party

Events by Design Partner Turns 30

Jessica Gillon, Events by Design partner turned 30 this month. To celebrate Events by Design provided entertainment for an 80's style party in her and other friends that had their birthday's in April. The music and atmosphere was all 80's all night. The styles ranged from Madonna to The Cult. Everyone had a fantastic time and there was even an adult tricycle race to determine who still had it.

The DJ's brought a mix of 80's tunes, light, and fog to make the night complete. Everyone danced to the tunes of Boy George, Tom Tom Club, George Michael, and Cyndi Lauper to name a few. Everything went off without a hitch.

To find out what kinds of services we can provide for you please contact us.

A love Story

The Love Story of Peter and Stephanie

21 year-old Stephanie Patterson was diagnosed with retinal blastoma at the age of 5 months, resulting in the physical loss of one eye and considerable sight damage to the other. Stephanie overcame this illness, only to develop five additional tumors throughout her young life; the most recent of which is currently being treated by her doctors through radiation and chemotherapy at UCSD's Thornton Hospital.

Stephanie met Peter Cook, also 21 and visually impaired, in blind school almost three years ago and they have been inseparable ever since. Stephanie now sees only shadows and heavily depends upon Peter for physical and emotional support, especially since the birth of one year-old Kayleb. Stephanie's courage, Peter's unwavering support, and their commitment and dedication to each other is the source of our inspiration in the creation of a beautiful wedding day - at no expense whatsoever to the couple or their families. The dream of giving Peter and Stephanie a day they will remember for the rest of their lives has become a reality due to the generosity and enthusiasm of so many. Plans for their wedding in the beautiful Spanish-style Rancho Bernardo Courtyard on October 22, 2006 are underway and near completion.
Special Thanks

Events by Design's owners and partners, John and Jessica Gillon, William O'Bannon, and Robin Pickett wish to express their appreciation to the many sponsors who have volunteered services or products as sponsors of Peter and Stephanie's wedding day.
